SSNS Seminar – Professor Jane Geddes ‘The Battle Scene on Sueno’s Stone, Forres: blood, burning and the Bible’
The SSNS Seminar Series continues on 12 December with a talk by Professor Jane Geddes. This is a free, ticketed event; please register below.
Abstract:
A new study of the battle scenes on ‘Sueno’s Stone’ was prompted by a detailed set of new drawings by John Borland and a C14 dating which places it in the later 9th century. These have allowed the scenes to be scrutinised for the first time, producing evidence of Viking sacrifice and an arrangement of military engagement related to the structure of early heroic poetry, supported by connections to the biblical King David.
